Back to Basics

April 15, 2016

I have a confession to make.

I don’t wanna workout

I don’t wanna cook.

I just wanna lay in my pajamas and read my book. Is that too much to ask???

I just came back from a week away at an all-inclusive resort with a girlfriend. We laid by the ocean and read books and our only care of the day was choosing which amazing restaurant we would eat our gourmet dinner at.  Seriously. Awesome.

Sharp contrast to today. I am back home to freezing cold Ontario where I have to cover every inch of my body with warmth. Oh how I miss the sun! I have 4 loads of laundry, my son will not let go of my leg, I am behind on work, there are permission slips to sign, groceries to buy, meals to cook, classes to plan and oh yeah I gotta work out too. Did I mention I miss you Mexico??

Me: “I don’t wanna play today.”

Reality: “This stuff is not gonna get done by itself”

Me: “grrrrr. Okay okay. I got it.”

I know I am not alone in this one. The life of a working Mom is filled with so many responsibilities, often ones that seem mundane, it can get a little overwhelming. And somehow in there, your trainer wants you to work out and cook a healthy meal. I get it. I may be that trainer. I am telling you this overwhelms me sometimes too. So what the heck do we do about it is the question??

Here is what I am choosing to do today. I am choosing to let some stuff slide. I am choosing to forget perfection.  I really, really don’t want to do anything but I know that I will feel better if I just take care of myself for a week. It doesn’t have to be perfect. I just have to start. I am choosing to go back to basics this week. I am not talking about the food/shelter/water thing. I am talking about my go to “rules” for being kind to my body. The things that make me feel healthy and vibrant again. Let’s face it, after a week of all you can eat buffet and laying on a chair, I am feeling a little rough. I have nothing to lose.

So what are MY basics? The things that I know will bring me back to ME. Here is what I came up with:

1) Exercise 4 times/ week for 30 min or more (doing something I actually like-I am not picky here…I just need to sweat this week)

2) Drink 2-3 Liters of water a day (I feel like a zombie without it)

3) Eat 3 healthy meals and 2 snacks that I actually like (not just what I think I “should” be eating…this is key for me)

4) Carve out at least 20 min a day for something I love- sometimes it’s reading a book, other times its just drinking a cup of coffee in silence. No rules here.

So these are my basics.

What are yours?

When life gets crazy (and believe me it will) it’s helpful to know what YOU need to feel like yourself again. You can use mine as a guideline. You might like some and not all of them. That’s cool.  Yours may not be for me either. The bottom line is to let go of perfection and rules and take care of yourself in your own way.

So I challenge you today to pick one thing. One thing that will allow you to feel healthier, happier, and more vibrant.  More like YOU. I can’t guarantee it will take your stress away completely. I can however guarantee that any combination of exercise, healthy eating and self-care will completely transform you AND the way you deal with your family, job, friends or stressful events. And here’s the thing. One thing will lead to two and three and so on.

What do you have to lose?

One thing.

So lets pull up our big girl pants together and get after this thing.

Onward and upward my friends.

Onward and upward.
