5 Steps to Get Back on Track Today

August 24, 2016

It’s no secret that summer is a slow season in the fitness industry.  My clients head to their cottages to take a some well deserved time off and vow to do the resistance band workout I gave them with great regularity. We all have the best intentions. But then the chips get passed around, the drinks start pouring and before we know it, our workout has been skipped AND we grew a food baby overnight.

Then we come home from our vacation and we are STILL eating this way, and STILL pushing off the workouts to tomorrow. We know we feel better when we take care of our body so why the heck is it sooooooo hard to get out of a fitness funk??

The good news is that there IS a way to get back on track and you can start right now with these 5 easy steps

  1. Stop beating yourself up already:

So you may have gained a bit of weight and are feeling less than stellar about your bod right now. Rather than taking every chance you can find to pick on your poor self , choose to let it go. Let me say it again…LET IT GO!! Although you CAN change your body back, you can’t make this happen overnight. Accept that this is where you are right now. This is the body you have and YOU are still YOU regardless of your jean size.   Dress nice, put your make up on and rock the bod you are currently residing in.

2) Assess the “damage”:

While I believe that is important to give ourselves a bit of a break, I also believe its important not to live in complete denial.  It’s important to check in and see what work needs to be done.  While the scale is most people’s go to measurement tool, I recommend trying on your clothes to see if they still fit. If they are a bit snug, you know its time to eliminate the post dinner bowl of cereal and hit the gym.

3) Figure out your “Why”:

Before you move forward with your plan, its important to figure out WHY getting back into shape is important for you.  Its great to say “ I wanna lose 10 lbs” but its so much more compelling to say “ I want to take care of my body so I can be a good role model for my family and so that I feel strong and confident again”. Knowing your “why” is what will get you out of bed at 6am to do your workout.  Don’t skip this step. It’s a game changer.

4) Make a Plan (preferably with a deadline):

Now it’s time to create your plan of attack. If your goal is to lose 10lbs, you need to address the habits that will help you get there and put them into place. Create a schedule for your workouts, plan the meals you are going to prepare for the week and stick to it. Creating a goal without having a plan is like going on a road trip without your trusty GPS.  You simply wouldn’t do it.  You also wouldn’t pack up your family on a cross country road trip without an idea of your ETA.  Pick a realistic deadline for your goal to keep you on track. Don’t leave it up to chance. Set yourself up to succeed by mapping it out first.

5) Make yourself accountable:

How many times have you started a workout program only to get a few weeks into it and bail? Beginning an exercise program or healthy eating plan is hard work and accountability makes all the difference in our “stick-to- it-iveness”.  Join a fitness class with a friend, hire a trainer, challenge your office to a weight loss challenge or post your goals on social media.  Whatever the option you choose, building in some level of support is key. A coach or friend will challenge you to work harder, push through obstacles or call your bluff when you are making excuses.

With fall being just around the corner (eek!), now is the perfect time to re-evaluate your health and fitness goals. Did you fall off track a bit this summer? Are you ready to dive right back in? Remember, life is not a perfect straight line and neither is your fitness plan. There will be ups and downs but it’s the way we recover from these obstacles that will make or break our results long term. Start with one little step in the right direction and arm yourself with the tools you need to succeed and there will be no limit to your success.
