How to Stay Fit (and Sane) for the Holidays

The tree is up, the house is decorated and the kids are buzzing. Christmas will be here in no time and while it can be a really fun time of year, it can also be extremely stressful. Our social calendars are so full we can barely breathe, our credit card balance is slowly creeping up, and our to do list resembles a legal contract. Phew!!!

It's important to remember that YOU have a choice in all of this. The holidays can "happen" to us OR we can choose to take control of them by preparing a few strategies ahead of time. Here are my top 5 tips to stay fit AND sane for the Holidays this year:

1. Keep your exercise routine

Relatives will be visiting, parties will be happening. There are a lot of things you can't control but you can control this. Fitting in time for exercise, even 20-30 minutes will not only help you keep off the holiday pounds, it will also help you lower your stress levels so you can cope with all the chaos that is the holiday season. 2. Take some shortcuts

Tis the season for simplicity in the kitchen. It is the time for easy healthy options like store bought fruit or veggie trays, frozen veggies, rotisserie chickens, bagged salads. It doesn't have to be perfect. Keeping a few of these healthy convenience foods in the house will make it easier to eat well when life is a little crazy.

3. Get rid of the "should do list"

Life is busy to begin with. Add in a ton of extra items on your to do list (shopping, wrapping, etc etc). There's a ton of pressure at Christmas to do it all. Do you really need to bake 6 dozen cookies or hand make all your gifts this year? Let go of the excess this year and focus on what's really important.

4. Play mind games

Lacing up your shoes for a workout can be downright daunting on a good day let alone when life is crazy busy. Getting started however, is half the battle. One really great trick I use is the 10 minute rule. Give yourself permission to quit after 10 minutes of exercise. This simple trick has gotten me through many a grumpy day. The reason it works is that it takes the pressure of perfection away and allows you to just get started. If you do this, I can almost guarantee that you will end up doing at least 20 minutes or more. Once those feel good hormones kick in, you will be wondering why you didn't want to do it in the first place.

5. Navigate the Buffet like a Champ

Holiday parties are filled with rich, decadent delights and its so hard to choose! Before you fill your plate, take a breath and analyze your choices. It is ok to indulge a bit but choose wisely. I use what I call the 10/10 rule. If I am going to put it on my plate it needs to be a 10/10 on a scale of awesomeness for me. Have you ever found yourself eating something and you really don't even like it that much? If you are going to indulge (and you will...this is also why you have been exercising) make sure it is something that you absolutely love. Your pants will thank you in January.

Since the holidays are busy enough, I've taken all the guesswork out of your fitness plan so you don't even have to think about are SOOOOOO welcome!
