I met Renee in April of this year and I knew right away that she would be a success story. She was one of many Moms who joined me for the Spring Session of my Mommy and Me Fitness Class with a goal of getting back into pre-baby shape. Renee's main concern was that she was "slow" on the soccer field after having her baby 7 weeks ago! Personal Trainer, Amy Miller and me educated Renee on her Post Partum body and convinced her that a more slow and steady Fitness program was best right now. (She literally wanted to start plyometrics and agility training right after giving birth!) I loved and still love her "get after it" attitude!
Renee took our advice, came to our classes, and took the slow and steady (and safe) approach AND still achieved huge results. Here is the story of Renee's amazing health and fitness transformation:
1) What programs are you/have you used with My Fit Coach and what was your motivation to get started?
I have been training with Kim since April 2016. My friend asked if I wanted to join Kim’s Mommy and Me Class I said sure and there I was 7 weeks after giving birth, working out with Kim. When that was finished, I did her summer bootcamp program with Amy Miller, and two rounds of Fit in 6. I am currently on my third round of Fit in 6 and I love it! I have always been a very active person. I play soccer, I workout regularly, I love walking my dogs, being outside etc. When I got pregnant, I played soccer until I was 12 weeks and I went to the gym a few times a week until two weeks before having my son Cohen. Regardless of how well I ate or worked out, I packed on the weight throughout my pregnancy, gaining about 40 pounds. As soon as Cohen was born, I wanted to lose it and fast! I needed to play soccer in the summer and wanted to get into my shorts!
2) What kind of results have you seen since starting your program?
I joined Mommy and Me in April and I had about 25 pounds to lose. I had goals in mind such as fitting into my pre-pregnancy clothes, feeling happy with my body and being able to hold a plank again. Since starting with Kim, I have lost 49 pounds, I fit into all my pre-pregnancy clothes and many are too big for me. I feel more confident in my body and am not scared to get into my bathing suit to go swimming with Cohen. The biggest change is in my eating habits. I am making smarter decisions, am planning my snacks ahead of time and always have something prepared incase I get side tracked. This has also led to my husband improving on his eating habits, choosing fruits and veggies over chips!
3) How has your success with fitness and health transferred into your every day life?
My every day life has been greatly impacted by my healthy lifestyle. I find that I am more mentally prepared for the week as I plan what I’ll be doing each day and what I’ll be eating for each meal. If I do have a treat, my body doesn’t like me and it never tastes quite as good as I would have liked it to. I have also been getting up earlier than my son, getting his breakfast and my breakfast ready so that when he is awake we can start our day. I’m not a morning person so this is huge!
4) What is your biggest challenge for you when it comes to healthy living and how do you work around this?
My biggest challenge for healthy living is fitting everything in. My family is so busy and we are always on the go. I work around this by always having snacks to grab in the fridge and bags of home made trail mix in my diaper bag. I plan my week in terms of what meals I’ll be making and try to follow it as closely as I can. I find that the more I plan, the more likely I can stick with it, especially when it comes to my eating.
5) Is there one thing that you expected to be hard in your training that turned out to be not so bad at all?
When I started training I thought it would be hard to stay committed to the plan. I have found that I get flaky after a few weeks. Thankfully Kim stays on top of me! The three week check in also helps as I have always seen results which is so encouraging.
6) What’s your favourite healthy recipe to make on a busy weeknight?
My favourite healthy meal is a salad! I love the variety and foods you can add to make salads different from day to day. I currently am obsessed with putting chickpeas, ground turkey, every colour pepper, cucumber, and carrots into a big bowl with shredded lettuce and mixing it together.
I also love a shake every morning because with my little guy wanting my attention, they are the easiest! A typical shake includes: Hemp seeds, chia seeds, protein powder, almond milk, a pepper and a half, 1/3 cucumber, handful spinach and frozen fruit.
7) What’s your favourite exercise? Least favourite? And why?
My favourite exercises are weighted squats and walking lunges! I feel so strong when doing them and love the feeling the next day. My least favourite is side planks. They are awful! When I started with Kim I could hold each side for maybe 10 seconds. Now, I hold for 40+ seconds! (I still don’t like them though…)
8) If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting out on their health and fitness journey, what would it be?
Don’t give up! Find someone who will hold you responsible and encourage you (every time I want these certain chips I love, my husband reminds me that they make me sick)! If you have one off day, it’s okay! Make the next day awesome! Let Kim help you and don’t be scared to ask for help!
